Having owned the 3ds for 4 months now and the d-pad of mine has barely been used. It creates a cramp or i need to hold it awkwardly to not create a cramp. most of the mario kart ds plays best with all digital buttons but the d-pad is way outta comfort. and by the way the 3ds XL looks it might be more comfortable to use the d-pad once again!
I usually don't use the D-Pad much seeing that I only use it for Mutant Mudds and some VC games and in the future NSMB2. But when I do use it, it does not cramp my hand, but my hands are not that big so that is likely the reason for me.
I don't usually use the D-pad at all. Only when I need to. When you actually use the D-Pad, do you use it the WHOLE time you play, or do you switch between? Since it is so low, you might need to bring the 3DS a little further away from you, so it puts less strain on your hand. Like what Xilef and Firejonie said, i don't get cramps in my hand
i like to use a d-pad for a game like mario kart or spectrobes beyond the portals for the whole time playing because it gives you full control. using a dpad for games that would could use analog gets confusing or clunky. i love to snake in mario kart and the d-pad is just not suitable for the fast gameplay i used to do with a dsiXL(i hope its in good hands). maybe its just me.

Yea, I use the D-Pad for Kirby games, because when you mmove upward, you fly. With the anolog, you can only go so far before you start flying. Thus is why I like to use the D-Pad. Like i said before, i use it for certain games, and i have a whole lot, so im not that prone to hand cramps
