2 hours 46 minutes? Ouch. Didn't think it was quite that bad! Every report I've read so far has said that 4.5 to 5 hours is the norm, and mine lasted for nearly 5 hours before needing to be plugged in (during which I played a lot of Pilotwings Resort and SSF4). I don't use the 3D much though due to not being able to see out of one eye properly...maybe it's the 3D effect that's draining the battery quicker than anything else?

He's running it all on the maximum battery-draining settings. So that's not necessarily "the norm," more like the minimum.

Who the heck plays in the highest light setting anyways.

Me, I live under a rock.

Actually, higher light settings are necessary for playing in bright areas, not in pitch black. That'll just hurt your eyes.

^^It's only necessary if the sun is out and there's tons of glare. Otherwise, that's too bright for me (and I love my backlight).

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

I got around 2.5 hrs out of my initial charge playing Madden. I didn't think that the short battery life would bother me, but I will admit that it's a bit unimpressive. Hopefully we will see a high capacity battery release before long.

UPDATE: I just found this, but I would be weary before going out and purchasing this right off the bat. This is promising 20 hrs of playtime, but I honestly don't see how that is possible.

whats even more shocking is that i read a certain part of the booklet and found out that you can only charge it 500 times before the batter sucks o.o

That's with every battery in every device. DS, Iphone, PSP...whatever. But I didn't find it that bad. Also: after 500 charges (the year has 365 days, so that's a while) you can probably affort to buy a new one. ^^

I'm going to order that Hyperkin battery. I've already taken the 3DS apart anyway, so it should be easy to install. I'll put it through its paces when it arrives. We'll see how good it really is.

While I absolutely appreciate your willingness to put SCIENCE to work on this, I don't have high expectations for that. Also, I'm pretty sure I saw identical batteries on eBay for like half that price.

I think I should mention for everyone's information that (although I'm not certain) I wouldn't be surprised at all if putting a non-OEM battery into your 3DS voided it's warranty. And putting a bad (malfunctioning/damaged) battery in your console could potentially damage it.

Well with the normal factory setting, sound all the way up, 3D all the way up as well...I get ALMOST 3 hours until the very low light starts blinking. It seems about spot on to me!
Will play around with the settings to see how many extra hours I can squeeze out of it.

@Corbs: The thing i'm worried about is that this battery is just a little over-exaggerated sprinkled with marketing (an ungodly amount of hours set at LOW settings). But please let us know...it will likely be down to that battery and Nyko.

Dont forget lads:

  • if you get into contact with battery acid wash your hands with water!
  • if your eyes get into contact with battery acid wash it with clear water and see doctor immediately!
  • dont expose battery in direct fire!

You can plug it in and play until doomsday anyway so what's the problem? If you're out of juice get to the nearest electrical outlet duh.

Sure, try to play Steel Diver while plugged in, you literally have to stand and turn all the way around when in periscope mode....

I got 2 1/2 hours with wireless off but I was using the cameras during some of that time.

Well as long as you stay near the power socket and don't jerk the 3ds out of the wall. You should still be able to do a 360 while standing. I did notice it's kind of a problem while trying to use the camera or scanning those AR cards.

Fully charged my DSi XL gets about 18-20 hours on lowest brightness and wireless off. My 3DS lasted 5 hours and 12 minutes with 3D, lowest brightness, and wireless off. I'll have to charge it more often than I'm used to, but it's not really a big deal for me.

I also appreciate you doing this for science. I wouldn't stress about voiding your warrantee. It would be easy enough to switch the original battery back in if something goes wrong. What Ninty doesn't know won't hurt them...

I've already opened my 3DS and removed the motherboard, analog pad, d-pad, and assorted other things to look at. I'm not overly concerned with voiding the warranty. What I can't fix myself would warrant a new system anyway.

I'll also pick up that wrist charger and see how it works.

I've played for about 2 1/2 hours on my 3DS so far, and I still have 4 out of 5 bars on the battery bar.

I think it is being over exaggerated. Or... maybe I'm just used to my iPod touch dying every 5 seconds.

For me the battery life is fine. I will be playing at home at almost all time anyway.

I've got a usb battery myself. I used to have it for my iphone but I noticed I can use it for my 3DS as well when i have the dsi usb charger. so I have an emergency supply of power everywhere I go.
