So, despite making a show of the 3DS' ability to play movies, Nintendo is not actually able to offer that feature properly, yet.

This is not good news. Although I wasn't fussed at the movie feature, the 3DS is already not living up to the feature list that Nintendo rolled out. It makes me more concerned that the online features haven't really been fixed at all, and whether the 3DS is, in reality, any more than a more powerful processor than a DSi with a (really awesome) 3D gimmick.

I hope I'm wrong.

How are they failing to live up to the hype when they haven't even started their ad campaign yet? Us up-to-the-minute gaming news people are giddy about this handheld, but the average folks don't know very much at all about the Nintendo 3DS. We'll know if the hype failed when they've seen the 3DS and are still unaware.

I say give them time.

What? They have started their marketing campaign. The E3 reveal, the media events since, the videos of the 3DS, the interviews - all part of marketing.

I agree. That feature, in itself, isn't of any interest to me (aside from potentially beauty and the beast. That's gold in 3D).

I'm just concerned, as I said earlier, whether Nintendo is capable of actually delivering what they're saying the 3DS can do. It's looking more and more like a glorified DSi, and very little innovation beyond the 3D stuff.

If they can live up to just a bit of what people are expecting from it here on the forums, i'm sure the normal, more non-gaming type of people will warm up to it quite quickly. Whatever the final product ends up being.

I just wonder if they'll end up with a 3ds XL version. lol.

At the very least it's living up to my expectations. The DS and Wii were enough innovation for me. A vastly superior version of what works + a potentially cool gimmick is all I really want/need.

read there source, this is what he said:

"“Finally about the movies, nothing concrete has been decided yet. When we demonstrated Nintendo 3DS for the first time in the world at the time of E3, we were allowed to showcase some 3D movie trailers from a few Hollywood studios (to people including many from the Hollywood movie industry), and we have received a number of offers since then. Therefore, I am certain that people in Hollywood are interested in this new product. Whenever we have shown Nintendo 3DS, almost without any exceptions, people have shown strong interest in it. We understand that many movie theaters will be able to show 3D movies, and a considerable amount of movie content is going to be made in 3D. When it comes to the opportunity for them to be able to show 3D movies, however, people in Hollywood currently do not believe that 3D television sets will be able to spread into ordinary households with rapid speed. I have the impression that they see Nintendo 3DS as a strong candidate to become the very first 3D device to be able to spread into the mass market in massive volumes. I’d like to discuss more details at some later time, when I will be able to do so.”"

Look at the last line. its the same thing what he said about the 3DS shop when he couldn't discuss it at the e3.

the article you linked is really negative, while there source is just talking on a natural way about things.

He basically said that alot of people where interested into the 3DS ( movie wise "holywood" ) and that they are busy with the whole thing around it. Like licenses etc.

You reaction onto it, is like "oh 1 dude got a problem" oh no, but what if "the whole country" will have the same problem. Would the "whole world get destroyed"?.
Stop overreacting on nothing.

some other reactions on your openings post:
"Although I wasn't fussed at the movie feature, the 3DS is already not living up to the feature list that Nintendo rolled out."
already not living up? they didn't made any announcement yet. the 3DS isn't launched. how can the 3DS not live up "at this moment" towards the feature list?

they only said, we are discussing it atm. and we cant announce anything. like every company does. when they are dealing with licenses etc etc. it says nothing.

next quote:
"It makes me more concerned that the online features haven't really been fixed at all"
what makes you think that the online feature hasn't been fixed at all? when there even is a video released about it, which got hugely updated. whiel other stuff like streetpassing etc is announced.

They simple hold online facts away from people, so that "hackers" do not get a headstart on things. Besides that, it still can be in development at this date.

"and whether the 3DS is, in reality, any more than a more powerful processor than a DSi with a (really awesome) 3D gimmick."
The world ends at 2012 you did know that right. because you forgot to mention this. /sarcasme

It is a more powerfull dsi, + a 3D feature + this + that + etc. whats your point?

I don't get it; why don't we just wait until the actual release before we start throwing accusations?

Yeah, Nintendo hasn't finalized any deals for movies yet because they're waiting until they have the numbers. They want to be able to show Hollywood that they have a large, LARGE install base and that distributing movies in 3d on their machine is something they should do, for cheap.

Probably. But I'm still hyped as crazy.

Only people who are really hyped about the 3DS are getting all of the information (we're constantly looking at this website for updates on 3DS news). But if only we know about it, it could be easier to get at launch! XD

Did they announce 3D movie playback on the 3DS as a concrete feature, or was it only speculated or hinted at? I don't remember reading more than speculation about 3D movies.

I think Nintendo is just being wary of pushing out a multimedia flop like the PSP and its UMD movies. It seems they're still researching how they could distribute the movies (movie cartridges seem, er, weird imo), and probably also cutting deals with the film studios.

I wonder if the 3DS is powerful enough to have Netflix.

The 3DS isn't even out yet and someone is already rooting for the Big N to fail? WaltzElf don't make me cry. Don't tell me you're nay-saying buddy! Anyway, enough joking.

The goody, good 3DS will indeed get movies.
This is simply another tactic on the part of the big minds to keep people tossing waggle back and forth until the 3DS arrives next year.

I never expected the 3D movies feature to take off in any significant way on the 3DS, nor should anyone. It was just one more thing to help show off the system's capabilities at E3, with few games far enough along to demonstrate.

Nintendo's strength will never be in the area of getting various media content providers on board. Nintendo isn't Sony. In fact, that's why I'm so supportive of the company, as it's the only one of the big three that is entirely focused on gaming in itself without tying that in with larger media aspirations. I don't want the 3DS to have anything to do with carrying water for the (misguided, IMO) larger media push for 3D content at the theatre and in overpriced TV sets.

EDIT - I also don't want any Nintendo handheld to even think about being a phone. I couldn't be happier that they've decided to leave that conversation behind.

I don't expect anything other than games to be good on the 3DS, I've lost all faith on Nintendo doing multimedia in any fashion that isn't a compete disaster.

I still want them to prove me wrong though, but I'm not holding my breath.

The only thing it'll get right is games, which they obviously should. lol

Which is a shame too because being able to play 3D movies would've been cool, and open a huge profitable market for kids who want 3D animated movies on their DS..But then again, the storage size would be restricted to only hold probably 1 or 2 movies without an SD card, which might cause confusion with parents on how it works. It won't be out of the box easy to do like the Ipod or Zune.

OldBoy

I hope this is wrong.I was really looking forward to watchin Avatar in 3D on the bog . Could've been sweet. Ah well its probably best Nintendo stick to games as their attempts at multi media so far have been weak. (internet channel anyone!)
As long as there is some sweet games I guess I can live without the movies.

What's this bit for again?

LzWinky

This is quite the ignorant topic Waltz and I'm disappointed. Nintendo said there were no plans finalized YET. Nowhere did it say that the 3DS was incapable of playing 3D movies nor did Nintendo accept nor deny it. There are still a few more months before the release of the 3DS, so let's sit back and relax and wait to see what Nintendo has in store.

Don't worry, WaltzElf, when you have the 3DS in your hands I can guarantee you will be blown away. And not just because of the 3D.
