I am considering getting a 3ds, and i like 3d but i'm just wondering, is there any performance difference between 2d and 3d modes? If 2d performs at better frame rates than 3d or sports a higher resolution it would be good to know. And if the difference is there, is it major? Cos then ill be up for a 2ds instead.
There are a few games that will run at a higher FPS with the 3D off than with it on, but not many, and I think in most cases the FPS would just drop from 60 to 30, which is perfectly acceptable IMO. And since the 3D is optional, if you end up disliking the performance of a game with 3D on, you can just switch it off. I think most good quality games will run with the same performance whether 3D is on or off though.

Which 3DS model are you interested in? Because you can always turn off 3D, it really comes down to clamshell (3ds) vs flat slate (2ds) and screen size.
Yeah, if you turn the 3D all the way off on the 3DS, it switches to the sometimes improved performance of 2D mode. There aren't that many games where it makes a huge difference though. The only I can think of right now are:
-Ironfall 2D version gives you 60fps.
-Monster Hunter 4 2D version adds anti-aliasing.
