A full screen, 3D remastering of the NES trilogy on one cartridge with a level editor would do just fine. I know, not the most original idea but there's fun to be had.

BEST gaming news of 2012 thus far, in my book! As an old skool gamer, I live for new Mario side-scrollers! My heart went SQUEE when I read that! I can't help but hope for a true Super Mario Bros. 5 one day (in Japan, at least, Super Mario World was called SMB 4). And with 3DS now supporting DLC, periodical new level packs, please!

I hope for pixel's sake it's a 3D remake of Bowser's Inside Story.

Even though I assume you're joking that would actually be an excellent idea. In fact a remake of BIS would be a perfect fit for the 3DS. I mean, the top screen is in 3D, the bottom screen is in 2D, plus the circle pad which is on the top is used for 3D movement and the D-pad on the bottom is used for 2D movement. I also wouldn't mind replacing some of the sprites with actual 3D models.
But if it is going to be a 2D sidescroller, I know what it should be called: Super Mario Bros. 3............D!
And of course it should be based on SMB3 (and SMW) but with updated graphics and new, interesting, and fun mechanics.

If the 3DS has not been discontinued SM3DL and MK7 are awesome games, but if the 3DS has been discontinued Sony has taken over the world. It is not true that both Sony has taken over the world and SM3DL and MK7 are not awesome games. Therefore:Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are...

Even so, it's too early for a remake of BIS and that would be a really dumb decision as that's one game that wouldn't benefit from the 3D like an actual Mario adventure would.

Whatever form it comes in; New Super Mario Bros. 3DS, Super Mario Bros. 5, Super Mario Land 4, or whatever; I'll be a happy camper with a new Mario side scroller!

I've gotta wonder if they adapted the New Super Mario Bros. Mii demo for Wii U shown at E3 for 3DS instead! Imagine (pay attention, fellow NL Bronies) playing a Mario side scroller online with the options of Mario Kart 7!

One thing I don't like is that likely means no 2D Mario side scroller (like aforementioned NSMB Mii) for Wii U at launch. Seeing that at E3 last year, I had dreams of the first Mario side scroller for a Nintendo console's launch since Super NES/SMW!

A level editor and LBP-like level sharing plus sharing via QR Codes and Streetpass, now that would be awesome.

It's most likely gonna be new super mario bros.mii with connectivity to the Wii U.

A lot of these ideas sounds great, sequels to Super Mario (Dream World) 2 or Super Mario World would be interesting. A New Super Mario Bros sequel would be awesome also. Been playing Mutant Mudds today, what if they did something like that where Mario could jump on these pads and get warped to the back ground? Shantae from a year ago also did something like that. Maybe thats how they are going to use the 3D?

Super Mario Bros. 2 sequel.

That would be so epic. Here is hoping for online multiplayer and/or a level editor.

Awesome.
But why would you wan't online multiplayer or a level-editor?
I would like DLC, so free level packs down the line (not stuff that should have been I the game.)

I have a bad feeling about this. A 2D mario title would feel inferior to Super Mario 3D Land unless it held different innovative gameplay (which it wont - it's a Mario title). Nintendo have also mentioned a few times the fact that not all retail games need to, and wont, use the 3D effect at all, and with Nintendo announcing this as a 2D Mario title - this may be what they mean. This far into the 3DS' lifetime - that would be a very bad sign. More titles are always great - but I'm not looking forward to this with the info we currently have.

Also @WaveBoy - It's like you want that comment to be deleted by an admin.

I'd say it's most likely New Super Mario 3DS, which is alright, but I'm kind of getting bored of those. Also, I felt like they lifted heavily from SMB3 with those games, and Super Mario 3D Land borrows from 3 completely, so it would kinda be redundant.

I'd like to see a Super Mario Land 3 (or 3D), but with Super Mario 3D Land, I feel like they kinda made that difficult. The naming would be confusing. They should've made Super Mario 3D Land based on the Land titles if they were going there.

Technically for many people outside of Japan they could have a Super Mario World 3D, because there was a Super Mario World 2, but that wouldn't jive with the Japanese numbering.

Who knows! This is definitely one to keep an eye on! Hopefully we hear about it at CES 2012 in March.

NSMB Wii was Super Mario Bros. 5. It had new levels, new worlds, new enemies, Koopa Kids and Bowser Jr., etc. What more could you want?

What if NSMB Mii was for both Wii U and 3DS, with content sharing between the two (save files, custom levels, "achievements", etc.)? That would be the ultimate Mario game for me.
