Satoru Iwata has shared the following announcement in a recent investor meeting: Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year.

2D? After 3D Land I would have liked a full 3D game. Not complaining though. Full 2D classic Mario platforming? Sweet! Please be actually original all e way through though. Preferably a download title too. Unless it has plenty of levels. Can't wait to hear more!
2D as in NSMB or actual 2D? I have a feeling it is the latter, and they are planning to use 3D as an integral gameplay mechanic that will blow our minds. At least I hope so.
Maybe this one those titles that Nintendo said WON'T have 3D. Now that would be an interesting move by Nintendo if this is the case.

I'm excited to see whats in store for the next E3. I'd love to see something that isn't "New" in the title, NSMB was good, but it relied heavily on nostalgia and the levels felt short. Wouldn't a new Mario game that uses Sprites instead of 3D polygons be a breath of fresh air?

Totally. I could get behind a innovative Mario title with fresh Mario sprites, it's been a while since we've seen a different impression of Mario.
After 3D Land, which used a good blend of 2D and 3D styles, the New Mario Bros. games felt little redundant to me. There is enough 2D gaming in 3D Land, I really don't feel another 2D title is needed. I think they should be working on a further evolution of 3D Land, or another exploration orientated title.
If it's a new 2D sidescrolling Mario title, it will undoubtedly be the next NSMB game. I just wonder what gimmick it'll have this time? I'm almost positive that the multiplayer from NSMBW won't make a reappearance but if it does, that would be nice. However, I feel like it needs something "new" to get me really excited about it.
