The GBA SP AGS-001 can turn the brightness on and off via the button at the top center of the bottom plate just above the other buttons. There is only one setting of that model.

The GBA SP AGS-101 can turn the brightness between 2 levels with the same button BUT it can't turn it off completely! It can be a little brighter than the AGS-001 or very bright which is my favourite because the screen and the game look gorgeous!
