If you're fine with a used one, you can find them on ebay for pretty reasonable prices last I checked.

If you want one brand new, then yeah. Good luck buddy.

I ran into this exact same problem and finally sighed and grabbed a N3DS XL this past holiday season; Amazon was offering a great deal on SNES-themed units. I'm pleased with my purchase overall, but I agree that the displayed games look slightly better on smaller models.

As mentioned above, these were never formally sold in North America outside of some limited special editions that sold out faster than you can blink. The fact that Nintendo of America only opted to release the XL when other regions offered both is still a head-scratcher IMO. Yes, it would have been a smaller section of the market, but the market was there.

Your best bet would be to import a system or to try to find a good deal for a used one.

@Josiah077 Yes, they're all region locked, but you can break the lock. Or are you just referring to the system language? I'd be surprised if that couldn't be hacked too, but I've never needed to look into it.

@Alinkttpresent I am aware that it is called the New Nintendo 3DS. I was just worried that people would confuse it for an XL because the names are so similar.

@gcunit Thank you so much! I will try to find a used one in good condition. To answer your question, I did some research and found out that the Japanese import is region-locked which is pretty annoying, but I won't give up.

@Anti-Matter I have looked on every website I could find. Yes that includes Amazon, but I could look again.

@Josiah077 I'm no expert on the matter, but I would let go of any hope (if you had any) of buying a brand new one from a retailer (beyond the odd miracle find). Any unused ones will be sold at a premium and your best bet is importing a used one I'd have thought.

This is beyond the bound of the site rules really, but bear in mind that you could get a Japanese model and make it region free. But whether you can change the system language from Japanese... I don't know.

The official name of the product you are looking for is "New Nintendo 3DS". It has been discontinued in the Americas, so I'm not sure where you can get one

I'v seen a few on Ebay, Amazon, and even Wall-mart @Josiah077 but the one's at wall-mart where the Orange&White and Galaxy themed on but they might have a regular one i wasn't looking for one so i just noticed them in passing.

[spoiler]The smaller new model was never really released in America outside of special editions, it's probably expensive new, but you could try searching for the Pokemon or Mario models they sold some time ago, on Amazon or eBay.[/spoiler]
